Book Club Review February: An Inheritance of Magic by Benedict Jacka

An Inheritance of Magic is a starter to a new urban fantasy series by Benedict Jacka, the author of Alex Verus novels - I loved this previous series so it was an automatic pre-order for me!

Our lead MC, Stephen Oakwood inherited the natural talent of magic that causes enemies to follow him after his father disappears. Unwanted he finds out about the magical high society and gets in trouble with them. I like his instincts with magic and how he works to just figure things out. It’s not easy to do things without proper teachers and I feel that because he was never told he couldn’t do something, he has far more potential and considers things very differently to how others would.

I love Jacka’s fast pace and the way he builds worlds, while this story is unrelated to the previous series I could see the same amount of attention to detail while keeping the story interesting. I did have moments that I felt that there could have been more happening but there was a lot to understand about the magic system and the world-building in this first book so I feel that the second book can hit the ground running.

Overall, this was a fun and engaging read and I liked the storyline. I am excited to see where the story will go. You can find a paperback copy here or it is also available on kindle here.
