Book Club Review: January Chosen by Stacy Jones
Chosen by Stacy Jones - Lily (24) has inherited her grandmother’s farm. She struggles to keep the bills paid, as the farm is in disrepair. One night she hears a noise, and goes out to comfort her animals. This is top tier, alien abduction material.
Lily soon finds herself on a foreign planet. Frightened, but happy to be on land. She meets some native animals, and three very interesting-looking aliens.
The language barrier lasts the entire book, with the characters communicating, using several different methods. I really like the idea of nonverbal communication. If you have ever taken a sign language course, or gone on a silent retreat, it is amazing how much can be said using body language. Simple things like movements of the eyes, lips, hand motions, a raise of the shoulder, etc. Granted, these are aliens, so you have to give a little artistic license when it comes to stories like these.
Lily was fun. She was easygoing and had a good head on her shoulders. While at first fearful of these giant aliens who possess tails, have downy fur and markings covering their bodies, and four arms, they are the most gentle of giants and do everything they can to ease her fears and treat her with the best of care. Each one has a personality of their own, and we’re given glimpses into their own minds in a way that is not confusing. Who needs a favourite in a why-choose novel?!
A helpful language glossary and general glossary can be found at the end of the story. I didn’t feel it was necessary, because the story is written in a way that the communication is easily understood. There are brief moments of multiple POV’s, so that helps as well.
While it’s kept my complete interest in reading the diverse relationship between a human female and three very different male aliens alone, we get action, angst, and suspense. I am definitely a new fan. Book one does end up on a slight cliffhanger which might be what prompted me to read all 3 of the following books this month eek! They are also in Kindle Unlimited so if you’re a fan and want to keep the love train going check them out!
